French soap labels were commonly printed by lithography that was popular from the early 1900s to 1950. I love framing them for bathroom decor. Hope you like this one!

Victorian Scrap - Ladies and Roses

I made a little collage sheet for you today with some late 1800 ladies, and roses. Scrapbooks were popular in the late Victorian era into the early 1900s. Germany was a huge supplier of beautifully printed, embossed scrap pages that were sold in stationery shops. The pieces were attached by thin strips of paper to make them easy to cut out. The bits were glued into large books. There are lots of old scrapbooks for sale on Ebay if you'd ever like to see what they looked like!

Vintage Halloween Postcard - Husband Conjuring

A beautiful lady wistfully gazes at her future husband's face on Halloween. Hope he's a nice guy!
I love the traces of glitter left on the card. The old glitter used to be silver and tarnished easily. If you look closely there is one area of glitter that isn't tarnished and might be what the original used to look like!

Ellen Clapsaddle Halloween Girl

I'm in full Halloween mode. I'm sorry!!! The end of August comes around and I become fully obsessed. This little Halloween girl is one of the more rare Ellen Clapsaddle postcards. She shows up, but not as often her other Halloween kids. I love the apples on strings, and the pumpkin face!

Vintage Halloween Postcard - Flying Pumpkins!

Ghosty jack o lanterns on flying black cats, watch out!?! This bright, embossed postcard was published by Barton and Spooner in the early 1900s. I didn't know anything about this company, but I found out:
The company was established in 1892 by the craftsman, Harry L. Barton who manufactured wooden souvenirs. After the turn of the 20th century he took on Ralph Spooner as a partner in order to expand into commercial and art printing. They opened a factory together at 1133 Broadway in New York City. Though they printed calendars, maps and other goods there, most of their postcards were printed in Germany.
They published mostly monotone regional postcards but ventured out into some cool Halloween images as well.

Victorian Perfume Trade Card

This is a very cool trade card in the form of a silk purse (or let's get Victorian and call it a reticule!). I always wonder what the perfumes smelled like. I'm not a big perfume person, and some scents give me a headache, but maybe this one was light and pretty!

Halloween Dont's Vintage Postcard

Morning everybody! I think I'm sort of recovered from the college move yesterday, but I think it's going to take a bit of caffeine!
This is one of my favorite series of vintage Halloween postcards, the Halloween Dont's. Make sure you don't do any of these things on Halloween or else! The series was published around 1911 by M.L.Jackson. I'm not sure if he was the publisher or the artist. All of his postcards are vividly printed with embossing. Hope you like this one!
Here's what it says: Don't go to sleep on Halloween, but watch the way the Witches fly, If it's to the west it's all for the best, Your lover is true then go to rest. (Hmm...)

Vintage Fairy Queen Postcard

I love this fairy postcard! It is part of a six card Raphael Tuck set called Happy Land. If you can find one in really good condition they are worth a lot of money! I don't know the artist, but the illustration style is typical of the early 1930s.

Clapsaddle Halloween Postcard

Ellen Clapsaddle was an amazing artist and entrepreneur, and is famous for painting adorable children. She spent time in Germany learning the illustration trade, then came home in 1901 to start her own publishing company, Wolf Publishing. It was a very successful business! Her style is widely recognized and loved.
This little girl is using an old Halloween charm.  Peel an apple, keeping the peel in one piece.  Throw it over your shoulder, and the peel will form the initial of the man you will marry.
This is one of my favorites.

Halloween Postcard - Girl and Candle

Halloween used to be the time to conjure up who you were going to marry. There are lots of ways to do this involving apple peels, chestnuts, and mirrors. In this case, at midnight you would stand facing away from a mirror, light a candle, take 3 steps backward, say something witchy, then look over your shoulder into the mirror. You would then see your future husband.
I can just picture this, the girl looks over her shoulder, sees Mr. Pumpkin man saying "Hi Babe" and faints!!!
This postcard was painted by Frances Brundage (one of my favorite illustrators) and published by Raphael Tuck.

Winsch Halloween Postcard 1911

John Winsch was a postcard publisher in business between about 1907 to 1915. He used various artists, including Samuel Schmucker, for his cards. I think this card is Schmucker's, it looks like his work. I love this one!

Vintage Halloween Witch Postcard - Red Lantern

I have a lot of favorite Halloween postcards, but this is near the top of the list. Published by Landsdorf in early 1900's, this is part of a series of lantern witches. Each postcard has a witch with a different color lantern, and what your fate will be if you happen to see her.
These postcards are really hard to find in good condition. They were embossed I believe, and there's usually lots of chipping. Most of the ones I've found are too damaged for me to restore properly, but this one was in great shape.
They also had glitter, and you can see remnants around the witch and the moon. I'm always on the hunt for the other lantern colors!

Vintage Halloween Postcard

There are several versions of this Taggart postcard, the most common one I've seen has a witch inside the pumpkin. This one features two rather surprised kids who will probably end up kissing unexpectedly! This was published in 1908.

Free Shabby Journal Card

I almost forgot to post this today! Sorry about that!

I made another journal card by photoshopping vintage postcard, then added an aged background and a dot overlay.  This is a very different style than what I sell in my Etsy shop, and I like doing these because it gets me thinking.  I love shabby graphics so I'm like, what am I going to make today and how do I get it looking vintage.

Vintage Halloween Precautions Postcard

The elusive E. Nash was a postcard publisher around the early 1910s and is famous for his series of Halloween postcards, both the Halloween Don'ts, and Halloween Precautions. This is one of the 6 Precautions postcards. He also published many other holiday cards.
The Don'ts and Precautions are all really quirky. This one says: Avoid grinning black cats on a full green moon, If your lover is true he'll come back soon, It breaks the charm, the witches scream, and never return till next Halloween.

Happy August!  I can't believe the summer is half way over.  Makes me sad, but I love fall too!
